How to choose the right exam

Most people arrive knowing the job they want, not the name of the test that stands in front of it. Work backwards from the credential and the state, and the exam names itself.

Start from the credential, not the exam name

Licences are issued by a state and follow that state's rules, so a real estate, insurance, notary or driving exam is really fifty different exams with the same title. Pick the state first; the exam page for it carries the fee, the pass mark and the retest rule that apply there and nowhere else. Certifications are issued by one body for the whole country, so an IT, healthcare, fitness or automotive credential has one exam wherever you sit it.

Within a credential, exams come in tiers. Securities and insurance licences stack an entry exam under the one you actually need, and several certifications require a foundation exam before the specialist one. The family page under each field lists the tiers in order, so the question of which to take first is answered by the order in which they appear.

What the fields mean

Fields group exams by the industry that recognises them, not by who writes them. A field holds one or more families, and a family holds the exams that belong to a single credential path: the tiers of one licence, the split and combined versions of one test, or the per-state variants of one exam. If two exams sit in the same family they are alternatives or steps on the same ladder; if they sit in different families they lead to different credentials.

The licensing fields are securities, insurance, real estate, driving, mortgage, government and legal. The certification fields are technology, healthcare, food service, fitness, automotive, workplace safety, engineering and education. Citizenship, military and languages hold exams set by a government or a testing body rather than an industry. Every field page opens with a guide to the order in which its exams are taken.

The numbers across every exam

Fees, pass rates and time limits as the issuing bodies publish them, compared across the catalog. Each exam's own line sits under it in the index below.

Of the 192 exams in the directory, 134 carry an exam fee verified against the issuing body's own page, from $15 for the New York State Notary Public Exam to $760 for the Certified Information Security Manager. For the rest, the fee is set by a school, a state vendor or a sponsoring firm, or we have not yet verified a figure, and each exam page says which.

Only 11 of the 192 exams carry a pass rate we could verify against a figure the issuing body itself publishes; among those that do, it runs from 39% on the Florida Real Estate Sales Associate Exam to 86.7% on the NCLEX-RN (Registered Nurse). Where no official figure exists, the exam page says “not published” rather than borrowing one from a prep vendor. The longest sitting is the General Securities Sales Supervisor Exam (Series 9/10) at 5h 30m; 124 exams publish a time limit at all.

The same licence, state by state

A licence exam carries one title and fifty rule books. These families have a state-specific exam in at least three states; the spread is the difference between the lowest and highest figure among them, each taken from the state body named on that state's exam page.
