You are in a graduated program: permit, then an intermediate or provisional licence, then a full licence, with a driver-education requirement in most states before the permit stage. The knowledge test is the gate into the program, so the sign and rules bank for your state is the study set.

No graduated stages, but the same vision screening and knowledge test, followed by a road test. States that let you skip the road test on a valid out-of-state licence still require the knowledge test when the licence has lapsed.

Only some states offer it, and each sets its own conditions: Hawaii and Alaska run the test through an approved online platform, Hawaii requiring a desktop or laptop with a webcam and no phones or tablets; Colorado and Michigan offer an at-home option alongside the office test. Elsewhere the test is in person, often by appointment.

New residents must apply for the new state's licence within a window after establishing residency. Whether you retake the knowledge test depends on the state and on whether your old licence is still valid; the state page says which.

Retest timing is set by each agency, from the next day or next business day in some states to a longer wait or a limit on attempts per fee in others. Failing usually means re-studying the sign section, where most missed questions come from.

Signs are classified by function — regulatory, warning, guide — and by shape and colour, and the handbook's sign chapter is the source the test draws from. Some states, North Carolina among them, score sign identification as its own pass-or-fail component.

States set a minimum age and a minimum licensed period for the supervising driver, and the learner's permit is only valid with that person beside them. The state page lists the rule alongside the permit's own validity period.
