NASM CPT versus ACE CPT: the exam content, side by side

The domain page covers what the two certifications have in common — NCCA accreditation, CPR and AED prerequisites, test-centre or live-remote delivery, recurring renewal. This page is about the exam content, which is where they differ. NASM's exam is organised around its Optimum Performance Training model: assessment, program design across stabilisation, strength and power phases, exercise technique, nutrition and behaviour-change basics, and professional practice. ACE's exam is organised around its Integrated Fitness Training model and weights client interviewing, rapport and behaviour change more heavily alongside assessment, program design and professional responsibility.

Both publish a content outline with domain weights, both use scaled scoring with a published passing score, and both sell exam-only registrations for candidates who have studied elsewhere. Read the two outlines and choose the model you want to train from; employers accept either.

Beyond the content model, the two exams differ in scale and format details that the candidate handbooks set out: NASM reports a scaled score with a fixed passing point, ACE reports on a wider scaled range, both are multiple choice, and both run for a fixed appointment length with no breaks under live remote proctoring. Each body publishes a candidate handbook with the identification rules, prohibited items and retake policy, and both revise fees and testing windows between editions — the exam page here carries the current figures.

How to use this family page: read both outlines, choose the model, open the exam guide for the domain weights and the candidate handbook's rules, and work the practice sets by domain. Schedule the CPR and AED course first, because the certificate must be current on exam day and the exam cannot be sat without it.

Which first: either — employers accept both accredited certifications, so choose the training model, not the credential name. Holding both is uncommon and adds little; the second certification of value is usually a specialisation such as corrective exercise, nutrition coaching or group fitness from the same body.

Which content outline is yours

Each page shows the question count, time limit, fee, scaled passing score and domain weights from the certifying body's outline.

I want a periodised, phase-based programming model

NASM's OPT model; domains cover assessment, program design by phase, technique, nutrition and professional practice.

I want a client-centred, behaviour-change model

ACE's IFT model; domains weight interviewing and rapport alongside assessment and programming.

I want to compare the outlines directly

Both outlines are linked from the exam pages; the practice sets here follow each outline's domains.

I already have exercise-science training

Exam-only registration is available from both.

I want to know the day-of rules

Government photo ID, current CPR/AED, and strict remote-proctoring conduct rules in each candidate handbook.
