Dental assisting

Dental assisting is regulated state by state, and the two exams here show the two models. The Certified Dental Assistant from DANB is a national certification made of component exams — general chairside, radiation health and safety, infection control — that most states recognise for expanded functions or for radiography, and that employers list as the standard credential. California's Registered Dental Assistant is a state licence issued by the Dental Board of California after a combined written and law-and-ethics examination, with its own eligibility route through approved education or work experience.

Which one you need depends on the state. In many states DANB components satisfy a specific requirement — radiography is the common one — while the licence itself, if the state has one, comes from the board. In California the RDA licence is the credential, and DANB certification is separate. The exam pages give the eligibility routes and the outlines for each.

The two exams test differently as well. DANB's components are each their own exam with their own outline — chairside procedures, radiography safety and technique, infection-control standards — and candidates may take them separately or together. California's combined written exam pairs clinical knowledge with a law-and-ethics section on the Dental Practice Act, the Board's regulations and the duties an RDA may and may not perform, and the Board publishes the outline for both parts.
