FE exam (Fundamentals of Engineering)

The two FE exams here share everything except the specification. Both are NCEES computer-based exams delivered year-round at Pearson VUE centres, closed book with the NCEES reference handbook on screen, scored pass or fail with no published cut score and no penalty for wrong answers, and limited to one attempt per testing window with a cap on attempts per year. What differs is the list of knowledge areas and how many questions each carries, and that is what the specification documents set out.

FE Civil weights structural analysis and design, geotechnical, transportation, water resources and environmental, construction and surveying on top of the common core of mathematics, probability, ethics, engineering economics and statics. FE Mechanical weights mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, materials, mechanical design, measurement and controls on the same core. Choose by degree; the specification you study to is the one you sit.

Test day is the same for both exams: a single appointment with a scheduled break, the NCEES reference handbook searchable on screen, an on-screen calculator alongside an approved handheld model from the NCEES list, and a diagnostic report by knowledge area if you do not pass. NCEES's examinee guide sets the identification, security and conduct rules and is required reading before the appointment.

Which first: only one — the discipline matching your degree. NCEES does not require or reward taking more than one FE, and state boards license on a single pass.
