Cost and registration
There is no exam fee. Regents examinations are administered by public schools in New York State as part of the state testing program, so an enrolled student does not pay to sit the exam. The June 2026 form ran 50 questions across 11 clusters, which is a fair picture of what to expect. Because a constructed-response item is worth exactly as much as a multiple-choice item, the 40 percent of the paper that has to be written carries 40 percent of the credits — and it is where most students leave marks on the table.
How clusters work, and why they change your pacing
Questions are not independent. Each cluster opens with an introduction stating how many questions belong to it, presents several stimuli — a map, a data table, a graph, a photograph, a reading passage — and then asks questions that draw on one or more of them. Each answer can add to a developing explanation, model, or design solution, so later questions in a cluster often build on reasoning you did earlier.
NYSED warns that the volume of real-world source material is likely greater than students have met on prior science Regents exams. The practical consequence: read a cluster's stimuli once, properly. That cost is amortized across four or five questions, whereas skimming it forces you to re-read for each item and puts the whole cluster at risk rather than one question.

Three topics can each reach 31 percent, so together they can account for roughly two thirds of the paper. Weight your revision accordingly. Human Sustainability is the one to check yourself on: it carries the same band as Space Systems and Earth's Systems, and it is systematically under-covered in review material written for the retired Physical Setting/Earth Science course.

NYSED converts your raw credit total to a scale score using a chart published on the day of that administration, and the scale score is your final examination score. The Department states explicitly that a chart from a previous administration must never be used, because the mapping changes each time. Every form published so far has needed fewer than half the available credits for a 65.
Read that as a reason to attempt everything, not as a reason to relax. Five performance levels are reported; Level 3 is the one that meets the content area requirements for a Regents diploma, and Level 5 means meeting the standards with distinction.
A four-week study plan
Week 1 — the reference tables. The exam requires a NYSED-provided reference table containing information you are expected to locate and apply rather than memorize; the June 2026 booklet directed students to the 2024 Edition. Drill lookups against a timer until finding a value is automatic. This is the highest return per hour available anywhere in your preparation.
Week 2 — the two heaviest topics you are weakest in. Pick from Space Systems, Earth's Systems, and Human Sustainability using an honest self-audit, not comfort. Work problems rather than re-reading notes.
Week 3 — a full released exam under real conditions. Three hours, calculator, reference tables, phone in another room. Then score it with the official rating guide, which shows exactly what a scorer accepts on constructed-response items. This is where most of your remaining marks are hiding.
Week 4 — constructed response, deliberately. Take the questions you lost credits on and rewrite the answers in one or two sentences that address the question actually asked. The most common way to lose a credit is answering a related but different question.
Test day
Three hours, and you bring nothing. The school provides a four-function or scientific calculator for your exclusive use and a clean copy of the reference tables; graphing calculators are not permitted. Possession or use of any communications device, however brief, invalidates the examination with no score calculated — leave the phone out of the room entirely.
Multiple-choice answers go on the separate answer sheet, constructed-response answers in the test booklet. Write in pen except for graphs and drawings, which go in pencil. Sign the declaration on the answer sheet before you leave; an unsigned answer sheet and booklet cannot be accepted.
