Wisconsin Road Signs & Driver Knowledge Test

The Highway Signs Test asks 15 questions on sign shapes, colours and symbols — regulatory, warning, guide, construction and railroad — and allows three misses. The Knowledge Test's 50 questions cover the rules of the road, right of way, speed, lane use and safe driving, with ten misses allowed. The two are prepared for separately, and the sign practice sets here mirror the stand-alone sign test.

A Class D instruction permit holder is accompanied by a driver with at least two years of licensed driving experience holding a valid regular licence. The permit is held at least six months before a probationary licence, and the applicant logs at least 50 hours of driving experience, 10 of them during hours of darkness. The original Class D licence, valid eight years, costs $42.50.

The Knowledge Test is 50 questions passed at 40 correct and takes about 45 minutes; the Highway Signs Test is 15 questions passed at 12 correct. Each costs $10, pass or fail. The knowledge test can be attempted online twice, after which a candidate who has failed both attempts is directed to a DMV service center for an in-person test.

A failed test may be retaken no sooner than the next day, and the same test may be taken only five times within a one-year period. The Class D skills exam costs $15 and is charged for every appointment not cancelled 24 hours in advance. The $35 instruction permit runs 18 months, covering the six-month holding period and the practice hours.
