South Carolina Road Signs & Driver Knowledge Test

Road signs are blended into a single exam with traffic laws and driving safety rules rather than tested on their own. Regulatory, warning and guide signs by shape and colour, traffic signals and pavement markings all appear alongside right of way and speed, and the manual's 10-question sample shows the plain multiple-choice style the live questions use.

The beginner's permit is held for at least 180 days by an applicant under 18 and at least 30 days by an adult. A teen who is at least 15½ and under 16 is eligible for a conditional licence after meeting the requirements, and full driving privileges arrive at 17. Before that, the applicant logs at least 40 hours of supervised driving with a qualified licensed driver, ten of them at night.

The knowledge test itself costs $2.00. Once you pass, issuing the beginner's permit adds a separate $2.50 fee on top of the test fee.

SCDMV publishes neither a question count nor a passing score for the knowledge test, so the standard is met by knowing the manual rather than by aiming at a number. The test is taken at an SCDMV branch or with a One Stop third-party tester; the knowledge test fee is $2.00 and the beginner's permit $2.50 after passing.

The retest schedule SCDMV publishes is for the skills test that follows the permit: two business days after a first failure, seven calendar days after a second and 30 calendar days after a third, regardless of the applicant's age or experience. With the low test fee, a knowledge-test candidate loses little from a failed attempt except time — but the practice sets here are built so that the first attempt is the last.
