Indiana Road Signs & Driver Knowledge Test

Because the two components are scored separately, sign knowledge has to stand on its own: a strong rules score cannot rescue a weak signs score. The signs component draws on Chapter 6 of the Indiana Driver's Manual — shapes, colours and meanings — and the rules component covers traffic maneuvers, right of way, speed and the law.

Driver education in Indiana is a fixed shape: 30 hours of theoretical training and six hours behind the wheel, and it is the route that lets a 15-year-old hold a permit. The for-hire endorsement exam, for those who need it later, is 25 questions with no more than five misses, and motorcycle and for-hire endorsements carry a one-time $19.00 fee.

The exam is multiple choice on a computer at a BMV branch, in two separately scored components — signs, and traffic rules and maneuvers — with 80% or higher required on each. The BMV does not publish the question count per component.

A candidate who fails waits until the next business day to retake it. The driving skills exam that follows the permit period is scheduled no less than 48 business hours and no more than three weeks ahead, and a licence renewed late carries a $6 administrative penalty.
