Michigan Real Estate Salesperson Exam

The exam is a single combined test covering national real estate principles alongside Michigan-specific law and licensing rules. The largest content areas by weight are Contracts and Agency, with Practice of Real Estate and Property Ownership also making up a meaningful share of the test:

• Contracts — 19% of the exam
• Agency — 13% of the exam
• Practice of Real Estate — 12% of the exam
• Property Ownership — 10% of the exam

The Michigan-specific portion also draws from several state-law areas measured by item count rather than percentage: Additional State Topics (12 items), Statutory Requirements Governing the Activities of Licensees (10 items), Contractual Relationships (5 items), Licensing Requirements (5 items), and Duties and Powers of the Department and the State Board of Real Estate (3 items).

PSI, the exam vendor, charges a $79 examination fee, which is separate from the fees LARA charges for licensing itself. Candidates should expect an $88 new-application fee, a $15 certification-processing fee per address on record, and — for those relicensing after a lapse — a $108 three-year relicensure application fee. Renewing an active license runs $78 per 3-year cycle. Any fees beyond these should be confirmed against LARA's current fee schedule.

The Michigan Real Estate Salesperson Exam consists of 115 questions administered over a 180-minute time limit. Passing requires a 70% score, equal to 80 of the 115 raw points, and roughly 10% of the questions on a given form may be unscored experimental items that don't count toward the final score. Test-takers are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes before their scheduled appointment.
