The ASE A1 Engine Repair test is built around a fixed structure, and knowing that structure removes a lot of test-day anxiety.

  • 45 scored questions make up the official test.
  • You'll also see up to 10 additional research questions mixed in — these are unscored and used by ASE to evaluate future test items, but you can't tell them apart from scored ones, so treat every question as if it counts.

  • Lubrication and Cooling Systems Diagnosis and Repair — 8 questions.
  • Cylinder Head and Valve Train Diagnosis and Repair — 6 questions.
  • Engine Block Diagnosis and Repair — 4 questions.

Add those up and you get all 45 scored questions. That means General Engine Diagnosis alone accounts for roughly 40% of your score — more than the two smallest content areas combined. If your study time is limited, prioritize diagnostic reasoning skills first, then work down the list toward engine block specifics, which carries the smallest weight but still can't be skipped entirely.

Because General Engine Diagnosis carries the most weight on the test, it's worth understanding what "diagnosis" actually means in an ASE question rather than just memorizing a topic label.

  • Symptom-to-cause reasoning. Questions typically describe a complaint — a noise, a performance loss, a warning light — and ask which component or condition is the most likely cause.
  • Test-instrument logic. You're expected to know which tool (compression gauge, vacuum gauge, scan tool, oscilloscope) is appropriate for confirming or ruling out a suspected fault, and what a normal versus abnormal reading looks like.
  • Sequencing. Good diagnostic practice follows a logical order — verify the complaint, check for obvious causes, narrow down with testing, then repair — rather than jumping straight to parts replacement.
  • Interpreting readings. Many questions give you a specific gauge or scan-tool value and ask what it indicates, so comfort translating a number into a likely mechanical condition matters more than rote fact recall.

Because this content area is so broad, treat it as a skill to practice rather than a list to memorize — work through realistic diagnostic scenarios repeatedly so the reasoning becomes automatic under time pressure.

A distinctive feature of ASE tests is the "Technician A says... Technician B says..." question format, and it trips up first-time test takers more than the actual content does.

  • The setup. A short scenario is given, then two technicians each offer a statement or a proposed diagnosis. Your job is to judge each statement independently as true or false, then pick the answer choice that matches — Technician A only, Technician B only, both, or neither.
  • Why it's tricky. These questions punish skimming. Each statement has to be evaluated on its own merits; a plausible-sounding statement can still be wrong, and a correct-sounding pair can still contain one false half.
  • A reliable approach. Read Technician A's statement, decide true or false, then do the same for Technician B before looking at the answer choices — don't let the answer options bias which statement you evaluate first.
  • Watch for absolutes. Words like "always" or "never" in either technician's statement are frequently the tell that a statement is false, since automotive diagnosis rarely allows for zero exceptions.

Practicing this format specifically — not just the underlying engine knowledge — is one of the highest-leverage things you can do before test day.

It's worth separating two things that are easy to conflate: passing the A1 knowledge test, and holding full ASE certification.

  • The knowledge test measures whether you understand engine repair diagnostic principles well enough to answer scenario-based questions under a time limit — that's what this practice material prepares you for.
  • Full certification additionally requires documented relevant hands-on work experience in the field, which ASE verifies separately from the written test itself.
  • Recertification is ongoing. Passing once doesn't mean you're done — ASE-certified technicians must retest periodically to keep their credential active, which keeps certified status tied to current knowledge rather than a one-time achievement.
  • Employers and customers rely on both halves. A shop advertising ASE-certified technicians is signaling verified knowledge and verified experience, not just a passed exam.

If your goal is the credential and not just the test score, plan for the experience requirement alongside your study schedule — they run on separate tracks and neither one substitutes for the other.

The most efficient way to prepare for A1 is to let the content-area weights and the practice test drive your schedule, rather than reviewing every topic equally.

  • Start with a full practice test cold. Take one before you study anything else so you know your real starting point, not a guessed one.
  • Weight your review by question count. Spend the most time on General Engine Diagnosis, since it's worth the most points, then work down through the other content areas in order of their share of the 45 questions.
  • Drill the Technician A/B format separately. Even strong technical knowledge can lose points to a misread A/B question, so practice the format itself, not just the content.
  • Simulate the clock. Take at least one full practice run under the actual 75-minute limit so pacing becomes automatic instead of something you're calculating mid-test.
  • Retake missed-question sets. Track which content area your wrong answers cluster in and cycle back through those questions until the pattern disappears.

This approach turns a broad certification test into a short list of measurable gaps you can close before test day.
