PTCB CE Requirements 2026: Hours, Fees & Renewal Dates

Written by Every Exam Prep Editorial TeamPublished September 28, 2026

To keep the PTCB CPhT credential, you renew it every two years. PTCB's recertification policy requires 20 hours of continuing education (CE) per cycle, including at least 15 technician-specific hours, one hour of pharmacy law and one hour of patient safety, plus a $55 renewal fee. Renew late and the fee becomes $80; let the certification expire and reinstatement within a year costs $95 and one extra hour of law.

The 20 hours, broken down

These rules are from PTCB's Recertification Policy v3.5 (May 2026) and its help center, checked September 27, 2026. The CE mix for a CPhT renewal:

RequirementHoursNotes
Total CE per 2-year cycle20Must cover subject matter in the PTCE content outline
Technician-specific (T) CEat least 15The bulk of the 20
Pharmacist-specific (P) CEup to 5Optional
Pharmacy law (topic designator 03)12 when you apply for reinstatement
Patient safety (topic designator 05)1

The law and patient-safety hours count toward the 20, so a technician can meet the whole requirement with 20 technician-specific hours as long as one is law and one is patient safety. PTCB points to its CE Directory for ACPE-accredited courses and checks completion through CPE Monitor.

Three rules that trip renewals

  • Hours do not carry over. PTCB's policy says CE hours can only be applied to the cycle in which they are completed and cannot be carried into the next one, so extra hours earned this cycle are lost.
  • The cycle starts when you are certified. PTCB's policy says each two-year cycle begins on the date certification or recertification is granted, and the certification expires at the end of the cycle unless it is renewed.
  • Reinstatement needs a second law hour. PTCB requires two of the 20 hours to be pharmacy law for a reinstatement, against one for an on-time renewal.

What renewal costs, depending on when you apply

PTCB's renewal fee page gives these costs for a CPhT:

When you applyCostWhat else changes
Before the application deadline$55
After the deadline, before the certification expires$80$55 plus a $25 late fee
Within one year after it expires (reinstatement)$95Two of the 20 CE hours must be pharmacy law
More than one year after it expiresInitial certification againPTCB's policy sends you back through initial certification, which means the $129 PTCE

Letting a certification lapse past the one-year reinstatement window is the expensive mistake: the renewal that would have cost $55 becomes a new $129 exam application.

When to apply

PTCB's recertification page says you can renew beginning 60 days before your certification expires and gives the application deadline as 30 days before the expiration date. Its renewal fee page describes the late-fee deadline differently, as the 1st day of the month your certification expires. Applying at least 30 days before your expiration date meets both descriptions and avoids the $25 late fee.
