CFP Exam Changes 2026: OBBBA Questions, New Standards

Written by Every Exam Prep Editorial TeamSource and review policyPublished September 18, 2026
Verified against the official exam documentation

Two things changed for CFP® candidates in 2026, and neither touched the exam's format. The first landed on the March 2026 exam, which was the first administration to include questions related to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The second landed on September 1, 2026, when CFP Board revised the implementation dates of the Competency Standards it had approved in January — which means material written in the first half of 2026 now quotes dates that have moved.

Does this affect you?

Work down this list by the sitting you are booked for, not the date you registered:

  • You sat before the March 2026 exam. You were tested on pre-Act law. A passed exam is passed; nothing reopens.
  • You are sitting the March 2026 exam or any later one. OBBBA-related questions are in scope. This is the change that moves correct answers rather than logistics.
  • You are already certified. The exam change does not reach you. The continuing-education increase does, but not until Q4 2027 — your current cycle is unchanged.
  • You are working toward the experience requirement. Pro bono hours do not count yet. They begin counting in Q4 2027, and only up to a cap.
  • You hold the CIMA® designation. It joins the approved Accelerated Path credentials in Q2 2026.
  • You are reading a guide published between January and August 2026. Check its dates against the table below. Several of the quarters in the January announcement were pushed back on September 1, 2026, and a page written in between still carries the old ones.

What moved

WhatBeforeNowEffective
OBBBA-related tax questionsNot testedTestedMarch 2026 exam
CIMA® on the Accelerated PathNot an approved credentialApprovedQ2 2026
Minimum continuing education30 hours every two years40 hours every two years, up to 5 of them practice managementQ4 2027
Pro bono toward experienceDid not countUp to 500 hours of the 6,000-hour Standard Pathway requirementQ4 2027

The two Q4 2027 rows are the ones worth checking against whatever else you are reading. CFP Board approved both in January 2026 with earlier dates — the CE increase at Q1 2027 and the pro bono allowance at Q2 2027 — and moved both to Q4 2027 on September 1, 2026. Anything published in between is not wrong so much as superseded.

What to study differently

Only one section of your preparation is affected, and it is not the one candidates expect. The exam's eight Principal Knowledge Domains and their published weights did not move: Tax Planning is still 14% of the questions. What moved is the law those questions are written against. A tax figure, threshold or deduction you memorised from a pre-2026 outline may now be the wrong answer even though the topic is still in the same place on the blueprint, at the same weight.

The practical version of that: treat any dollar figure, cap or phase-out range in your tax materials as something to re-check against current law rather than something to re-memorise. Topic coverage is not what changed; the numbers inside the topics are. Working free CFP exam practice questions is the fastest way to find which of your remembered figures are stale, because a wrong answer on a number you were confident about is exactly the signal you are looking for.

What did not change

This is the longer list, and it is why most of your existing preparation is still good:

  • The format. 170 multiple-choice questions across two three-hour sessions, 85 questions per section, with a 40-minute break between them.
  • The blueprint. Eight Principal Knowledge Domains, each with its published weight. No domain was added, removed or re-weighted.
  • The schedule. Three 8-day testing windows a year, in March, July and November.
  • The standard. CFP Board still sets no predetermined pass rate and no fixed percent-correct threshold, so the OBBBA questions do not shift a cut score that was never published as a percentage.
  • The certification requirements. Education, exam, experience and ethics are all still required; none of the January 2026 updates removed a requirement.

Where the dates come from

Every date above is CFP Board's own. The March 2026 sitting was named as the first OBBBA exam in CFP Board's August 2025 announcement; the four standards changes and their quarters come from the January 27, 2026 Competency Standards announcement, which carries a note that its implementation dates were revised on September 1, 2026. If you are checking a change on another finance credential, the finance license exam changes tracker lists every dated change across FINRA, NASAA, the IRS, the AICPA and CFP Board with each regulator's own sentence.

One honest caveat: CFP Board dates these standards changes by quarter, not by day. "Q4 2027" is as precise as the source is, and this page will not invent a date the announcement does not give. The exam change is the one with a named administration, and it is the one that affects anyone sitting now.

Frequently asked questions

Did the CFP® exam change in 2026?

The format did not. What changed is what the tax questions are written against: the March 2026 administration was the first CFP® exam to include questions related to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Separately, CFP Board approved updates to the Competency Standards in January 2026 and revised several of their implementation dates on September 1, 2026 — those affect certification requirements around the exam, not the exam itself.

Is OBBBA tested on the CFP® exam?

Yes, from the March 2026 administration onward. CFP Board named that sitting as the first exam to include OBBBA-related questions. Candidates who sat before it were tested on pre-Act law, and a passed exam is not reopened by the change.

Is the CFP® exam format changing?

No. It remains 170 multiple-choice questions across two three-hour sessions, 85 questions per section, with a 40-minute break between them, built on eight Principal Knowledge Domains with published weights. The exam is offered three times a year in 8-day windows in March, July and November, and CFP Board still publishes no predetermined pass rate and no fixed percent-correct threshold.

When does the CFP® continuing education requirement rise to 40 hours?

In Q4 2027. The current minimum is 30 hours every two years; the approved change raises it to 40 hours every two years, of which up to five may focus on practice management. CFP Board originally dated this change to Q1 2027 and moved it to Q4 2027 on September 1, 2026, so material published earlier in 2026 quotes the older quarter.

Do pro bono hours count toward the CFP® experience requirement?

Not yet. Up to 500 hours of qualified pro bono financial planning will count toward the 6,000-hour Standard Pathway experience requirement, effective Q4 2027 — moved from Q2 2027 on September 1, 2026. Hours worked before the effective date are not addressed by the announcement, which dates the change by quarter rather than by day.

Does holding the CIMA® designation change anything?

It becomes one of the approved Accelerated Path credentials in Q2 2026. That is a route into certification, not an exemption from the exam: the education, exam, experience and ethics requirements all remain in place.
