50 questions. 40 correct to pass. 80 percent. Ten wrong answers of margin — spend none of them on signs and markings, which are national and stable.
Three named areas: traffic laws, safe driving practices, identifying traffic controls. Learner's licence from age 15, with a vision and hearing exam and the required education course.
Move Over — two rules, not one
- Move over a lane for emergency, service, utility and disabled vehicles stopped on the roadside.
- Can't move over safely? Slow to 20 mph below the posted limit. Posted 55 → 35. Posted 70 → 50.
- Posted 20 mph or less? Slow to 5 mph. This second branch is the one candidates miss — subtracting 20 from 20 gives no workable answer.
- Since January 1, 2025: covers any roadside vehicle with hazard lights, flares, or visible emergency signage. An ordinary driver changing a tyre now gets the same protection as a patrol car.
School buses — paint is not a barrier
Opposite-direction traffic may continue only where the highway is divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide.
- Painted lines and pavement markings are explicitly not barriers. A double yellow divides nothing here.
- Lane count is irrelevant — three lanes each way with no physical median still requires the stop.
- Even where the exception applies, slow and watch for students.
Minimum fine $265; $465 minimum if you pass on the side where children enter and exit. These are floors, not ceilings, and the escalation is about which side you passed — not how many times you've offended.
Under 21 — three parts
- 0.02 or more → licence immediately suspended six months. Administrative; does not wait on a court outcome.
- Second offence → one year (a flat period, not tied to turning 21).
- A Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course must be completed before hardship reinstatement. Serving the time alone does not restore driving.
Underneath: 0.08 adult, 0.04 commercial (attaches to the vehicle, not the licence). Implied consent applies throughout. Only time lowers BAC.
Right-of-way and signals
- Four-way stop: arrival order; right-hand rule breaks ties only.
- Left on a green ball: yield to oncoming.
- Flashing red = stop sign. Flashing yellow = caution. Opposite instructions.
- Steady yellow: stop if you safely can; too close means continue through.
Identifying traffic controls
- Octagon stop · downward triangle yield · diamond warning · pentagon school · circle railroad.
- Orange work zone · blue motorist services · brown recreational and cultural.
- Line colour tells you direction (white same way, yellow opposing); whether the line is solid or broken tells you permission (solid yellow on your side means no passing on your side).
- Following distance: three seconds good conditions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the one Florida number to memorise?
40 of 50. That is the pass mark, it is exactly 80 percent, and knowing it converts vague preparation into a budget of ten wrong answers you can decide how to spend.
What are the two Move Over speeds?
20 mph below the posted limit in the ordinary case, and 5 mph where the posted limit is 20 mph or less. Two rules, not one — and moving over a full lane remains the primary obligation whenever it is safe to do so.
Does a painted median let you pass a stopped school bus?
No. Florida requires a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least five feet wide, and states explicitly that painted lines and pavement markings do not count. Even where the exception does apply, slow down and watch for students loading or unloading.
What are the three parts of the under-21 rule?
0.02 triggers it. Six months immediately on a first offence, one year on a second. And a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course before hardship reinstatement — a precondition, not an alternative to serving the suspension.
