OH Road Signs Cheat Sheet.
The night-before summary, built like the exam.

Sign shapes — one message each

• Octagon: stop. Red with white letters, no exceptions.
• Downward triangle, red and white: yield.
• Yellow diamond, black symbols: warning — curve, merge, crossing ahead.
• Pentagon: school area, expect children.
• Round: advance warning for a railroad crossing.

Sign colors

• Orange: construction or maintenance work zone.
• Blue: motorist services — fuel, food, lodging.
• Brown: recreational and cultural areas — state parks, historic sites.

Pavement markings

• Yellow lines: opposing traffic on the other side.
• White lines: same-direction lanes.
• Solid yellow on your side: no passing from your direction.
• Dashed yellow on your side: pass only when the oncoming lane is clear well ahead.

Signals

• Steady yellow: red is coming — stop if you safely can.
• Flashing red: full stop, then go when clear, exactly like a stop sign.
• Dark signal: treat every approach as a stop sign.

Right-of-way

• All-way stop: first to stop goes first; simultaneous stop — yield to the right.
• Left turns always yield to oncoming traffic, mid-block included.
• Leaving a driveway or alley: yield to sidewalk and street traffic alike.
• Pedestrian in a crosswalk on your half of the road: slow or stop.

School bus — the automatic-fail topic

• Flashing reds plus stop arm — fewer than 4 lanes: both directions stop.
• 4+ lanes: only traffic moving the bus's direction stops; the far side proceeds with caution.
• Stay stopped until the reds quit and the arm folds in.

Speed and spacing

• Posted limit = maximum for good conditions, never a guarantee.
• Follow at 3 seconds minimum — count off a fixed marker after the car ahead passes it — and stretch the interval in rain, snow, ice, or fog.
• Fog and darkness: drive so you can stop within what you can see.
• Bridges and overpasses freeze first.
• Work zones: slow down, follow the flagger, leave extra room.
• Hydroplaning: off the gas, wheel straight, no hard braking.

OVI numbers

• Adult per se: 0.08 whole-blood alcohol concentration.
• Under 21: 0.02 zero-tolerance line.
• Commercial drivers: 0.04.
• Implied consent: refusing the chemical test = automatic suspension.
• Only time sobers you up — not coffee, showers, or exercise.

TIPIC snapshot

• Knowledge test: 40 questions, 75 percent (30 correct) passes; eligible at 15 years, 6 months.
• Under 18: 50 supervised hours with 10 at night, plus a 6-month permit hold.
• Probationary year one: no driving midnight to 6 a.m. without a qualifying adult or documented work, school, or religious travel; one non-family passenger cap.
