The numbers to remember

• 35 multiple-choice questions on the test.
• 28 correct needed to pass (80%).
• $7 fee per attempt, online via DMV2U or in person at a DMV office.
• 2 online attempts allowed per 24-hour period; 4 total online attempts per test type.
• Fail in person? You may retest the same day, depending on office resources.
• Caught cheating: locked out for 90 days.
• Permit eligibility starts at age 15; a Provisional Instruction Permit is valid for 2 years.
• Supervising driver must be at least 21 and licensed at least 3 years for the practice hours to count.

Sign shapes at a glance

• Octagon = stop. Only shape used for stop signs.
• Downward triangle = yield.
• Yellow diamond = warning sign, alerting you to a hazard or road-condition change ahead.
• White rectangle, black text = regulatory sign, telling you what you must or must not do.
• Green = guide/directional (distances, exits). Orange = construction/maintenance zones. Blue = motorist services (gas, food, hospital, rest area).
• Shape and color always come before wording — recognize the category first, then read the specific rule.

Right-of-way in one breath

• No signs at an intersection: first to arrive goes first; simultaneous arrival, yield to the driver on your right.
• Four-way stop: same first-come rule, right-hand tiebreak.
• Pedestrians in any crosswalk, marked or not, always get the right-of-way, and you must stay stopped until they clear the lane.
• Left turns yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians, no exceptions.
• Emergency vehicles with lights/siren always get the right-of-way; pull right and stop.
• Entering a road from a driveway or lot: the vehicle already on the road has the right-of-way.

Top traps

• The posted speed limit is a maximum for ideal conditions, not a safe target in rain, fog, ice, or heavy traffic — go slower when conditions call for it, and increase your following distance too.
• Impairment isn't only alcohol: drugs (including over-the-counter), fatigue, and distraction all count and degrade reaction time, judgment, and coordination the same way alcohol does.
• Refusing a lawfully requested breath/blood test carries its own penalty, separate from any impairment charge.
• Don't confuse warning (yellow diamond, alerts you) with regulatory (white rectangle, tells you what to do) — the test loves swapping these in answer choices.
• You get limited online attempts in any 24-hour window, so treat unlimited practice tests as your real dry run before spending an official attempt.
