The numbers to remember

• 25 questions, 60-minute time limit — plenty of time, so don't rush.
• Minimum age to take the test or get an instruction permit: 15.5 years.
• Minimum age for a provisional license: 16 years; you must hold the instruction permit at least 180 days first.
• Pass the test? You have 30 days to finish paperwork and documentation.
• Fail? Retest the next day. Disqualified? Wait 7 days.
• County fees: Hawaii County $11, Honolulu $12, Kauai $20, Maui $25.
• Online testing needs a desktop or laptop with webcam — no phones or tablets.
• Test can be taken online statewide, or in person at a county office on limited, appointment-only days.
• Supervising drivers for a learner must be at least 21 years old and licensed for that vehicle type.

Sign shapes at a glance

• Red octagon = stop.
• Red/white downward triangle = yield.
• Yellow diamond = general warning.

Right-of-way in one breath

You yield, you don't take. First to stop at a 4-way goes first; ties yield right. Left turns yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Entering/merging traffic yields to traffic already on the road. Pedestrians in a crosswalk always get the right-of-way, marked or not. Roundabout entrants yield to circulating traffic already inside. Pull over and stop for emergency vehicles running lights and sirens.

Top traps

• Thinking the posted speed limit is always safe — it's a maximum under ideal conditions, not a target in rain, fog, or heavy traffic.
• Assuming right-of-way is something you can assert — it's always something granted or yielded, never taken.
• Treating a driver under 21 the same as an adult for alcohol tolerance — the standard is stricter (effectively zero) for minors.
• Forgetting sign shape/color meaning when a question shows no text at all — study the category, not just individual signs.
• Showing up with a phone or tablet for the online test — only a desktop or laptop with a webcam is accepted.
• Missing your county's specific fee or process — Hawaii's four counties differ ($11 to $25) and each runs its own licensing division.
• Underestimating fatigue — drowsy driving slows reaction time much like alcohol does, and pulling over to rest is the correct call, not pushing through.
