Three hours, 45 to 55 questions arranged in 9 to 11 clusters, every question worth exactly one credit. Roughly 60 percent of those questions are multiple choice and roughly 40 percent are constructed response, so a form in the middle of the range gives you around 30 questions you can answer by selecting and around 20 you have to write.
The number that surprises most students is the passing mark. A 65 is a scale score, not a percentage. On the June 2026 form, 21 raw credits out of 50 converted to a 65 — under half. Across the four administrations published so far the figure has moved between 21 and 24 credits, because NYSED publishes a fresh conversion chart for every administration and the chart from a previous exam must never be reused. A 37 on that same June 2026 form converted to an 85.
Read that as encouragement rather than as permission to coast. It means a constructed-response question you half-answer is still worth chasing, and it means leaving items blank is the most expensive habit you can bring into the room.
NYSED publishes a topic-level blueprint with percent ranges rather than fixed counts. Space Systems, Earth's Systems, and Human Sustainability each take 20 to 31 percent. History of Earth and Weather and Climate each take 11 to 20 percent. Engineering, Technology, and the Applications of Science takes 3 to 9 percent, and those skills also show up inside questions aligned to the other topics rather than only in their own items.
Add the three big topics together and you are looking at roughly two thirds of the exam. Human Sustainability sitting level with Space Systems and Earth's Systems is the single biggest change from the old Physical Setting course, where human impact was a closing unit rather than a third of the assessment. Resource use, hazard mitigation, climate response, and the trade-offs in engineered solutions are core content now.
Every question measures the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards, and each one draws on all three dimensions at once: a science and engineering practice, a disciplinary core idea, and a crosscutting concept. In practice that means you are asked to analyze data, construct an explanation, or evaluate a design rather than to state a definition.
This is the structural feature that catches students who prepared with old Physical Setting papers. Questions are not independent. They are organized into clusters that follow an assessment storyline: an introduction telling you how many questions belong to the cluster, then several stimuli — a map, a data table, a graph, a photo, a short passage — and then questions that draw on one or more of those stimuli.
NYSED warns explicitly that the number of stimuli and the scale of real-world source material will likely be greater than students have seen on prior science Regents exams. That has a practical consequence for your clock. You cannot skim a cluster's stimuli; you have to read them once, properly, because four or five questions depend on them. Time spent understanding the setup at the start of a cluster is recovered on every question inside it.
It also changes how you use partial knowledge. Within a cluster each answer can add to a developing explanation, model, or design solution, so an idea you establish in the first question often frames the third and fourth. If a cluster is going badly, finish it anyway before moving on rather than half-abandoning a context you already paid to load.
Start with the reference tables, not with content review. The exam requires a NYSED-provided reference table that contains information you are expected to locate and apply rather than memorize, and the June 2026 booklet directed students to the 2024 Edition. Every hour you spend learning where things live in that booklet is an hour you do not spend hunting during the exam. Practise finding a value under time pressure until the lookup is automatic.
Then work with released exams rather than topic quizzes. NYSED publishes the full booklet, scoring key, rating guide, and conversion chart for every administration since the first in June 2025, which gives you four complete authentic forms. Sit one under real conditions — three hours, calculator, reference tables, no phone — and score it with the rating guide, which shows you exactly what a scorer accepts on constructed-response items.
Weight your content review toward the blueprint. If Space Systems, Earth's Systems, and Human Sustainability can each reach 31 percent, they deserve more of your time than a topic capped at 20 percent. Practise writing constructed-response answers out loud in one or two sentences, because the most common way to lose credit is answering a different question from the one asked.
You get three hours. Each student is provided a four-function or scientific calculator for their exclusive use for the entire examination, and graphing calculators are not permitted. Your school prints a clean copy of the reference tables for you, so there is nothing to bring and nothing to mark up in advance.
The communications device rule is absolute and worth repeating to yourself in the corridor: possession or use of any communications device is strictly prohibited during the examination, no matter how briefly, and the consequence is an invalidated exam with no score calculated. Leave the phone in a locker or at home.
Answers to multiple-choice questions go on the separate answer sheet; constructed-response answers go in the test booklet. Write in pen except for graphs and drawings, which should be in pencil. And sign the declaration on the answer sheet at the end, because an unsigned answer sheet and booklet cannot be accepted.
On pacing, three hours across roughly 50 one-credit questions is generous by Regents standards. Spend it on the constructed-response items, which is where the credits are hardest to earn and easiest to leave on the table.
Your raw credit total is converted to a scale score using the chart NYSED publishes for that administration, and the scale score is the score that goes on your record. There are five performance levels. Level 3 is the one that matters for graduation: students at Level 3 minimally meet the expectations of the standards and meet the content area requirements for a Regents diploma, though they may need extra support in later coursework. Level 5 means meeting the standards with distinction.
A course aligned to the Earth and Space Sciences standards counts as a physical science course under the diploma regulations, which matters when you are planning the rest of your science sequence. Admission to the exam also depends on the 1,200-minute laboratory requirement, and a student who completed the lab requirement is eligible to sit the exam regardless of whether they passed the course itself.
If you need to retake, the exam is offered at the January, June, and August administrations. Use the interval properly: pull the conversion chart and rating guide for the form you sat, work out which topics cost you credits, and drill those rather than re-reading everything.

Why can't S-waves reach the far side of Earth?
S-waves are shear waves and liquids have no shear strength, so they stop at the liquid outer core. The resulting shadow zone is how the outer core was identified.
What does the P-S arrival-time difference tell you?
The distance from that one station to the epicenter, read off the travel-time graph. Direction is not recoverable, so three stations are needed to locate the epicenter.
What causes the seasons?
Earth's 23.5-degree axial tilt, which changes the noon Sun angle and the number of daylight hours as Earth revolves. Distance from the Sun does not cause seasons — the hemispheres would then warm together.
Why don't eclipses happen every month?
The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees to Earth's orbital plane, so at most new and full moons the Moon passes above or below the shadow line.
What does redshift increasing with distance indicate?
That the universe is expanding, with more distant galaxies receding faster. This relationship, together with the cosmic microwave background, supports the Big Bang model.
Where in the H-R diagram do giants sit, and why?
Upper right — high luminosity with low surface temperature. Only an enormous radiating surface can be that bright while being that cool.
Where are elements heavier than iron formed?
In supernova explosions and neutron-star collisions. Fusing past iron absorbs energy rather than releasing it, so a stable stellar core cannot build those elements.
What does a small temperature-dewpoint spread mean?
The air is close to saturation, so fog, dew, or cloud formation is likely with only slight cooling. A wide spread means dry air and low relative humidity.
What weather accompanies a cold front?
A narrow band of showers or thunderstorms as warm moist air is forced up steeply, followed by falling temperatures, clearing skies, and rising pressure.
Why do coastal cities have smaller annual temperature ranges?
Water's high specific heat means it warms and cools far more slowly than land for the same energy input, moderating both summer highs and winter lows nearby.
How do greenhouse gases warm the surface?
They let incoming shortwave sunlight through but absorb the longwave infrared Earth radiates back to space, re-emitting part of it downward and raising the equilibrium surface temperature.
What is the ice-albedo feedback?
Melting bright ice exposes darker ocean that absorbs more sunlight, which warms the region further and melts more ice. It is why the Arctic warms faster than the global average.
Why does gravel transmit groundwater faster than clay?
Permeability depends on pore size and connectivity, not just porosity. Clay's microscopic, poorly connected pores hold water by capillary action; gravel's large connected openings let it flow.
How do glacial and river deposits differ?
Ice carries every particle size together and drops them unsorted and angular. Flowing water sorts particles by size as velocity changes and rounds them through repeated collisions.
How did the Finger Lakes form?
Continental ice sheets scoured pre-existing north-south stream valleys into deep, steep-walled troughs, and moraines dammed their southern ends.
What does an unconformity represent?
A buried erosional surface — a gap in the record where deposition stopped and erosion removed rock before deposition resumed. Touching layers can be millions of years apart.
What makes a good index fossil?
A short existence in geologic time, which makes it a precise time marker, combined with a wide geographic distribution so it appears in many separated outcrops.
Why does paving a watershed worsen flooding?
Impermeable surfaces cut infiltration, so a much larger share of rainfall becomes immediate runoff that reaches channels faster, raising and sharpening the flood peak.
Why does ocean carbon dioxide uptake harm shellfish?
Dissolved carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid, lowering pH and reducing the carbonate ions organisms need to build calcium carbonate shells and skeletons.
What are criteria and constraints in engineering design?
Criteria state what a successful solution must achieve; constraints state the limits it must respect, such as budget, materials, or time. Both are defined before designing begins.

- Cold front
- The leading edge of an advancing cold air mass, which forces warmer air ahead of it to rise steeply. This produces a narrow band of showers or thunderstorms followed by falling temperatures, clearing skies, and rising pressure.
- Constructed-response question
- An open-ended item where a student writes, draws, or completes an answer rather than selecting one, and records it in the test booklet. On the Earth and Space Sciences exam each constructed-response question is worth one credit, the same as a multiple-choice question.
- Convergent boundary
- A plate boundary where two plates move toward each other. Oceanic plates subduct to form trenches and volcanic arcs, while two continental plates crumple into folded mountain belts with greatly thickened crust because neither is dense enough to sink.
- Conversion chart
- The table NYSED publishes on the day of each administration that maps every possible raw score to a scale score and a performance level. Charts from earlier administrations must never be used, because the mapping is re-set for each form.
- Coriolis effect
- The apparent deflection of moving air and water caused by Earth's rotation — to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern. It turns pressure-driven flow into the spiralling circulation seen around highs and lows.
- Cosmic microwave background
- The nearly uniform microwave radiation filling all of space at about 2.7 kelvins, released when the early universe first became transparent. Its existence and near-uniformity are among the strongest confirmations of the Big Bang model.
- Criteria and constraints
- The two statements that define an engineering design problem: criteria specify what a successful solution must accomplish, and constraints specify the limits it must respect, such as budget, materials, or time. Both are set before any design work begins.
- Dewpoint
- The temperature to which air must be cooled at constant pressure for it to become saturated with water vapor. When air temperature and dewpoint are close together, relative humidity is high and condensation, fog, or precipitation becomes likely.
- Earth and Space Sciences Reference Tables
- The NYSED-published booklet of charts, maps, and constants that every student must be given during the examination. Students are expected to be able to locate and apply the information rather than memorize it, and schools print the current edition from the Department's website.
- Epicenter
- The point on Earth's surface directly above an earthquake's focus. The difference in P-wave and S-wave arrival times at a station gives the distance to the epicenter, so readings from three stations are needed to fix its location.
- Half-life
- The time required for half of the atoms of a radioactive isotope in a sample to decay. Because decay is exponential, one-quarter remains after two half-lives and one-eighth after three, which is the arithmetic most Regents dating questions rely on.
- Hertzsprung-Russell diagram
- A plot of stellar luminosity against surface temperature used to classify stars and trace their evolution. Main-sequence stars run diagonally across it, giants and supergiants occupy the luminous cool upper right, and white dwarfs sit hot and faint in the lower left.
- Ice-albedo feedback
- A self-reinforcing loop in which melting bright ice exposes darker ocean or land that absorbs more solar energy, causing further warming and further melting. It is a leading reason Arctic temperatures are rising faster than the global average.
- Index fossil
- A fossil species that existed for a geologically short time but spread over a wide area, making it a precise marker for correlating rock layers in separated locations. Long-lived or geographically restricted species are poor index fossils.
- Insolation
- The incoming solar radiation received by a surface, which varies with the Sun's angle, day length, and atmospheric conditions. Seasonal changes in insolation caused by Earth's 23.5-degree axial tilt are the direct driver of the seasons.
- NYSSLS
- The New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards, adopted in 2016 and built on three dimensions — science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Every question on the Earth and Space Sciences exam is written against these standards rather than the older 1996 standards.
- Ocean acidification
- The decline in seawater pH caused by the ocean absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which forms carbonic acid. Lower pH reduces the carbonate ions available to corals, shellfish, and plankton that build calcium carbonate structures.
- P-wave and S-wave
- The two body waves generated by an earthquake. P-waves are compressional and travel through solids and liquids, while S-waves are shear waves that cannot pass through liquid, which is how the liquid outer core was identified.
- Performance level
- One of five NYS levels that classify a student's demonstrated knowledge and skills on a science Regents examination. Level 3 minimally meets the standards and satisfies the content-area requirement for a Regents diploma, and Level 5 meets them with distinction.
- Permeability
- How readily a material transmits fluid through connected pore spaces. Clay can hold a great deal of water yet transmit it slowly because its pores are tiny and poorly connected, while gravel with large connected pores is highly permeable.
- Question cluster
- A group of questions on a NYSSLS science Regents exam that share an introduction, one or more stimuli, and a common phenomenon-based storyline. Each question in the cluster can build on the explanation or model developed by the questions before it.
- Radiometric dating
- Determining a rock or mineral's age from the ratio of a radioactive parent isotope to its decay product. The isotope chosen must have a half-life comparable to the age being measured, which is why carbon-14 dates recent organic remains and uranium-238 dates ancient rock.
- Rain shadow
- The persistently dry region on the leeward side of a mountain range. Air loses moisture as it rises and cools on the windward slope, then compresses and warms on the way down, so its relative humidity falls and precipitation becomes unlikely.
- Redshift
- The stretching of light from a source toward longer wavelengths, indicating that the source is moving away from the observer. Redshift that increases with distance across the sky is the primary evidence that the universe is expanding.
- Scale score
- The final reported examination score, produced by converting the raw credit total using the conversion chart published for that specific administration. It is not a percentage: the number of raw credits that converts to a 65 changes from one administration to the next.
- Seafloor spreading
- The process by which new oceanic crust forms at a mid-ocean ridge and moves outward as the plates separate. It produces a symmetric pattern of increasing rock age and mirrored magnetic stripes on either side of the ridge axis.
- Superposition
- The principle that in an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary layers, each layer is younger than the one beneath it. Combined with cross-cutting relationships, it lets a geologist order deposition, intrusion, faulting, and erosion events.
- Unconformity
- A buried erosional surface separating rock layers of very different ages, representing time missing from the record. Deposition stopped, erosion removed material, and deposition later resumed, so touching layers may be millions of years apart.
