Start with what the score actually is. Your ALEKS PPL placement result is a number between 0 and 100, and it represents the percentage of topics the system has identified you have mastered, drawn from a pool of 314 topics. There is no pass or fail: every college sets its own cut scores, so a 46 might open Calculus at one school and College Algebra at another. Find your school's cut-score table before you study, so you know exactly what number you are chasing.
McGraw Hill says the adaptive assessment reaches a placement in 25 questions or fewer, and schools commonly describe attempts of roughly 20 to 30 questions. The standard package includes 12 months of access to a personalized Prep and Learning Module and up to five assessment attempts. That combination matters: the first attempt is a diagnostic, not a verdict. On average, students who put about six hours into the learning module raise their placement by at least one course, which can save a semester of prerequisite coursework and the tuition that goes with it.
ALEKS PPL covers a broad spectrum of precalculus material, and because it is adaptive, it will probe until it finds your edge. Expect topics from these bands: whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; percents, proportions, and geometry basics such as perimeter, area, and volume; signed numbers, linear equations, and inequalities; lines, systems of equations, and function notation including domain; exponents, polynomials, and factoring; rational and radical expressions; quadratics, exponential functions, and logarithms; and right-triangle trigonometry with unit-circle basics.
Two features follow from the adaptive design. First, you will almost certainly see problems you cannot do; the system is supposed to find your ceiling, and answering honestly (including using the I don't know choice when you truly have no idea) gives a more accurate placement. Second, you cannot cherry-pick topics: a weak fractions foundation drags down everything built on it. Review in the order above, because arithmetic errors are the most common reason algebra answers come out wrong.
You do not sign up for ALEKS PPL on the open market; your college assigns it. Typically you activate access through your school portal after admission, and the math department or testing office publishes the rules: whether the attempt must be proctored, what time window applies, and which scores count for which terms. Because the details are institutional policy, treat your school's placement page as the authority and this guide as orientation.
The standard structure gives you up to five assessment attempts with 12 months of access to the Prep and Learning Module. Schools layer their own rules on top: many require a waiting period between attempts and a minimum number of hours in the learning module before a retake, and some accept only proctored scores for final placement. Plan backward from your registration date. If your target course requires a higher score, you want time for at least one study cycle and one retake before enrollment closes, so take your first attempt early rather than the week classes start.
Treat the first attempt as a diagnostic and the learning module as the cure. The sequence that works: take attempt one without cramming, let the system map what you know, then work the Prep and Learning Module on the topics it flags. The six-hour figure is the headline; students who study about six hours in the module raise their placement by at least one course on average, and focused practice on your actual gaps beats rereading notes on material you already own.
Because the assessment is open-response, practice writing out full answers, not recognizing them. Multiple-choice practice, including the questions on this site, is for checking whether you can produce the result; cover the choices, solve on paper, then compare. Drill the mechanical skills until they are automatic: fraction arithmetic, sign rules, exponent laws, factoring patterns, and the quadratic formula. A wrong sign in step one costs the whole problem when there is no answer list to warn you. Finish each session with a mixed set spanning several topic bands, since the real assessment jumps between areas.
Set up like it counts. Have scratch paper and a pencil ready, because ALEKS is open-response: you work each problem out by hand and enter the result. Do not bring your own calculator; an on-screen calculator appears automatically when a particular problem permits one, and outside calculators are not allowed. If your attempt is proctored, follow your school's check-in rules exactly so the score is accepted.
Pace yourself around two realities. First, answers are final: because the system is adaptive, once you submit an answer you cannot change it, so check your work before you press enter. Second, the time budget is generous but real; the average student finishes in about 90 minutes, and schools set the ceiling, with some allowing 2 hours and others planning for up to 3. Slow, careful, single-pass work is the right mode. When a problem is genuinely beyond you, say you don't know rather than guessing wildly; a lucky guess inflates the difficulty of what comes next without reflecting what you can actually do.
Your score appears immediately when you finish, so you will know where you stand the same day. Take that number to your school's cut-score table and read across: ALEKS PPL results are used to place students into courses spanning Basic Math up through Calculus, including statistics and corequisite options, and the table tells you which doors your score opens for the coming term.
If the placement is below the course you need, the path is study-then-retake, not despair. Your account's Prep and Learning Module is already tuned to the topics you missed; put in the hours, satisfy any school requirements between attempts, and take another of your available attempts. If the placement meets your target, enroll promptly, and skim your weakest bands anyway; the same skills reappear in week one of the course you just placed into. Either way, note any expiration policy your school applies to placement scores so an old result does not surprise you at registration.

Product rule for exponents
Same base multiplied: add exponents. x^5 times x^3 = x^8. The bases must match for the rule to apply.
Slope through two points
m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1), rise over run. Through (2, 5) and (6, 13): m = 8/4 = 2. Order must match top and bottom.
Slope-intercept form of a line
y = mx + b. The m is the slope (rate of change per unit of x) and b is the y-intercept, where the line crosses the y-axis at (0, b).
Parallel and perpendicular slopes
Parallel lines: equal slopes. Perpendicular lines: negative reciprocal slopes, so their product is -1. Perpendicular to slope 3/4 is -4/3.
Quadratic formula
For ax^2 + bx + c = 0: x = (-b plus or minus the square root of b^2 - 4ac) divided by 2a. Memorize it with the divide-by-2a covering the entire numerator.
Discriminant: how many real roots?
Compute b^2 - 4ac. Positive: two real roots. Zero: exactly one real root. Negative: no real roots. No need to finish the formula to count solutions.
Vertex of y = ax^2 + bx + c
The x-coordinate is -b/(2a); substitute it back to get y. For y = x^2 - 6x + 11: x = 3, y = 2, vertex (3, 2). Maximum if a < 0, minimum if a > 0.
Difference of squares pattern
a^2 - b^2 = (a - b)(a + b). Example: 9x^2 - 49 = (3x - 7)(3x + 7). Works only with a minus sign between two perfect squares.
Perfect square trinomial pattern
(a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2 and (a - b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2. Never drop the middle term: (2x - 5)^2 = 4x^2 - 20x + 25.
Quotient rule for exponents
Same base divided: subtract exponents, top minus bottom. y^4 / y^9 = y^(-5) = 1/y^5.
Power of a power rule
(x^a)^b = x^(ab): multiply the exponents. Also raise every factor: (2a^3)^4 = 2^4 times a^12 = 16a^12.
Negative exponent meaning
x^(-n) = 1/x^n, a reciprocal, never a negative value. 4^(-1) = 1/4. Move the factor across the fraction bar and make the exponent positive.
Zero exponent rule
Any nonzero base raised to the zero power equals 1. So 4^0 = 1 and (3x)^0 = 1 for nonzero 3x. It never equals zero.
Fractional exponent meaning
x^(m/n) means take the nth root, then raise to the m. 16^(3/4) = (fourth root of 16)^3 = 2^3 = 8. Denominator = root, numerator = power.
Converting between log and exponent form
log base b of x = y means b^y = x. Example: log base 3 of 81 = 4 because 3^4 = 81. Rewriting in exponent form is the first step of most log problems.
Log of a product
log(ab) = log a + log b. Example: log 8 + log 125 = log 1000 = 3 in base 10. The rule multiplies the insides; it never adds them.
Log of a quotient
log(a/b) = log a - log b. Subtraction outside matches division inside. Combined with the product rule, it condenses sums of logs into one log.
Log of a power
log(a^n) = n log a. The exponent inside the log becomes a multiplier outside. Used to pull variables out of exponents when solving equations.
Percent change formula
Percent change = (new - old) / old, times 100. Always divide by the ORIGINAL value. From 80 to 92: 12/80 = 15 percent increase.
Recovering an original price after a discount
Final price = original times (1 - rate). So original = final divided by (1 - rate). Paid $68 after 20 percent off: 68 / 0.80 = $85.
Cross-multiplication in a proportion
If a/b = c/d, then ad = bc (denominators nonzero). Each numerator pairs with the OPPOSITE denominator; pairing straight down is the classic error.
Area formulas: rectangle, triangle, circle
Rectangle: A = length times width. Triangle: A = one half base times height. Circle: A = pi r^2, using the radius squared, not the diameter.
Perimeter and circumference formulas
Rectangle perimeter: P = 2(l + w). Circle circumference: C = pi d = 2 pi r. Perimeter measures the border; area measures the surface.
Volume of a box and a cylinder
Rectangular box: V = length times width times height. Cylinder: V = pi r^2 h. Volume is cubic units; surface area is square units.
Pythagorean theorem
In a right triangle with legs a, b and hypotenuse c: a^2 + b^2 = c^2. Legs 24 and 10 give c = square root of 676 = 26. Common triples: 3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17.
SOH-CAH-TOA ratios
sin = opposite/hypotenuse, cos = adjacent/hypotenuse, tan = opposite/adjacent. Identify the sides relative to the angle before writing any ratio.
Special angle values (30, 45, 60)
sin 30 = 1/2, cos 30 = root 3 over 2; sin 45 = cos 45 = root 2 over 2; sin 60 = root 3 over 2, cos 60 = 1/2; tan 45 = 1. Tan = sin/cos fills in the rest.
Degrees to radians conversion
Multiply degrees by pi/180. So 150 degrees = 5 pi / 6, and 180 degrees = pi radians. To go back, multiply radians by 180/pi.
Pythagorean identity
sin^2 theta + cos^2 theta = 1 for every angle theta. Rearranged: 1 - cos^2 theta = sin^2 theta, the key to simplifying many trig expressions.
Dividing by a fraction
Multiply by the reciprocal: 4 1/2 divided by 3/8 = 9/2 times 8/3 = 12. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before flipping.
When does an inequality sign flip?
Only when you multiply or divide both sides by a NEGATIVE number. From -2x > 6, dividing by -2 gives x < -3. Adding or subtracting never flips it.
Solving |expression| = k
For k > 0, split into two equations: expression = k or expression = -k. |2x - 5| = 11 gives x = 8 or x = -3. For k < 0 there is no solution.
Distance, rate, and time triangle
d = rt, so t = d/r and r = d/t. 288 miles at 64 mph takes 288/64 = 4.5 hours. Keep units consistent before dividing.

- Absolute value
- A number's distance from zero on the number line, written with vertical bars. It is never negative, so both |5| and |-5| equal 5, and |x| = k splits into the two cases x = k and x = -k.
- Adaptive assessment
- A test that chooses each new question based on your answers so far. Correct answers lead to harder material, incorrect ones to easier material, so the test zeroes in on your level quickly.
- Coefficient
- The numeric factor multiplying a variable in a term. In 7x^2 the coefficient is 7. In a linear model the coefficient of the variable is the constant rate of change.
- Cut score
- The minimum ALEKS placement result a particular college requires for entry into a particular course. Each institution sets its own cut scores, so the same result can place differently at different schools.
- Discriminant
- The quantity b^2 - 4ac inside the quadratic formula. Its sign tells how many real solutions a quadratic equation has: two when positive, one when zero, and none when negative.
- Domain
- The set of all allowable inputs to a function. Values that force division by zero or a negative number under an even root are excluded from the domain of a real-valued function.
- Extraneous solution
- A candidate answer produced by valid algebra steps that fails the original equation, often after squaring both sides or clearing denominators. Checking every candidate weeds these out.
- Function
- A rule that assigns exactly one output to each allowed input. Function notation like f(4) means the output of the rule f when the input is 4, found by substituting 4 for the variable.
- Integer
- A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero, such as -3, 0, or 7. Integers have no fractional or decimal part, and the negative integers sit to the left of zero on the number line.
- Least common denominator
- The smallest number that all denominators in a group of fractions divide into evenly. Fractions must be rewritten over this shared denominator before they can be added or subtracted.
- Like terms
- Terms that have exactly the same variable part raised to the same powers, such as 3x^2 and -5x^2. Only like terms can be combined by adding or subtracting their coefficients.
- Logarithm
- The exponent to which a base must be raised to produce a given number. Log base 3 of 81 is 4 because 3 to the fourth power is 81; logs convert multiplication into addition.
- Open-response question
- A problem where you work out the answer on paper and type it in, rather than choosing from a list. ALEKS uses this format, so guessing strategies from multiple-choice tests do not apply.
- Order of operations
- The agreed sequence for evaluating expressions: parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.
- Percent change
- The size of a change measured against the starting value: the difference divided by the original amount, converted to a percent. A price going from 80 to 92 is a 15 percent increase.
- Placement Assessment
- The adaptive ALEKS test itself: a set of open-response math problems that estimates which topics you have mastered so your college can place you in the right math course.
- Polynomial
- An expression built from variables and constants using only addition, subtraction, and whole-number exponents, such as 4x^2 + 2x - 2. Polynomials are added by combining like terms.
- Prep and Learning Module
- The personalized ALEKS study environment tied to your assessment results. It targets the topics you missed and is the main tool for raising your placement on a retake.
- Proctored assessment
- A test attempt supervised by a person or monitoring software to confirm identity and prevent outside help. Many colleges require that at least one ALEKS attempt be proctored.
- Proportion
- An equation stating that two ratios are equal, such as 3/24 = x/60. Cross-multiplying the means and extremes turns a proportion into a solvable linear equation.
- Rational number
- Any number that can be written as a ratio of two integers, such as 3/4, -5, or 0.375. Every terminating or repeating decimal is rational, while numbers like the square root of 2 are not.
- Reciprocal
- The result of flipping a fraction: the reciprocal of a/b is b/a. A number times its reciprocal equals 1, and dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.
- Slope
- A measure of a line's steepness and direction: the change in y divided by the change in x between any two points. Positive slopes rise left to right and negative slopes fall.
- System of equations
- Two or more equations considered together. A solution must satisfy every equation at once; for two lines, the solution is the point where the graphs intersect.
- Unit circle
- The circle of radius 1 centered at the origin, used to extend sine and cosine to any angle. A point on the circle at angle theta has coordinates (cos theta, sin theta).
- Y-intercept
- The point where a graph crosses the vertical axis, found by setting x equal to zero. In the slope-intercept form y = mx + b, the y-intercept is the constant b at the point (0, b).
