Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is the academic-skills gate to most US teacher-preparation programs: three ETS subtests — Reading (5713), Writing (5723), and Mathematics (5733) — that many states and education programs require before admission or licensure. You can sit each subtest separately or register for the Core Combined test (5752), which schedules all three in one session.
There is no single national passing score. Each state sets its own cut score for each subtest, so the first step of any prep plan is checking your state's requirements on the ETS site — some states have replaced Core with alternatives (SAT/ACT/GRE waivers are common), and finding that out early can save you the exam entirely.
The test is computer-delivered and, unusually among licensure exams, can be taken at home under remote proctoring as well as at a test center. Registration includes four free score recipients, so your program and state agency can receive scores without extra fees if you name them when you register.
Reading (5713) runs 85 minutes with 56 selected-response questions built on passages and statements — that is about 90 seconds per question, including reading time, which is why passage-attack strategy matters more here than raw reading speed.
Writing (5723) is 100 minutes in three separately timed sections: a 40-minute selected-response section of 40 questions, then two 30-minute essays, each on an assigned topic. The selected-response and essay skills are different enough that they deserve separate practice tracks.
Mathematics (5733) runs 90 minutes with 56 questions mixing selected-response and numeric-entry formats — numeric entry means typing the answer with no choices to lean on, so estimation habits that catch keystroke errors pay off.
All three subtests may include unscored pretest questions that are not identified, so treat every question as if it counts. Taking the Combined test (5752) stacks the three back-to-back in a single sitting — roughly four and a half hours of testing plus breaks — while separate registration lets you spread them across weeks and focus prep on one subtest at a time.
ETS builds the Reading subtest from four stimulus types: paired passages of about 200 words with four to seven questions, long passages of about 200 words with four to seven questions, short passages of about 100 words with two or three questions, and brief statements followed by a single question. Knowing the mix matters because the multi-question passages reward a first read for structure — what claim, what evidence, what pivot words — while single-question statements are answered fastest by reading the question first.
The one rule that governs everything: every answer is in the passage. ETS states outright that no question requires outside knowledge — so when a choice is true in the real world but absent from the text, it is a trap, not an answer. The most reliable wrong-answer patterns are choices that overstate (always, never, entirely), choices that import outside facts, and choices that answer a different question than the one asked.
Question types to drill: main idea and best title (must span the whole passage), purpose of a detail (why the example appears), vocabulary in context (substitute each choice into the sentence), supported inference (the most modest conclusion wins), and argument evaluation (spot alternative explanations and exposed assumptions).
The 40-minute selected-response section divides into four parts: usage, sentence correction, revision-in-context, and research skills. Usage questions ask you to recognize errors in mechanics, grammar, and idiom — or to recognize that a sentence has no error, which is itself a tested skill. Sentence correction presents an underlined portion with four rewrites; revision-in-context works inside a draft passage; research skills covers source credibility, citation practice, and quotation integrity.
The highest-frequency grammar targets are stable from form to form: subject-verb agreement across intervening phrases, pronoun case and reference, parallel structure in series, dangling and misplaced modifiers, comma splices versus legitimate joins, and commonly confused word pairs. Drill these until identification is automatic — the section averages a minute per question.
The two essays are separately timed at 30 minutes each: one asks for your own argued position, the other for analysis grounded in provided sources. For both, scorers reward a clear arguable thesis, organized paragraphs that each do one job, and specific support — not length, vocabulary flourishes, or hedged both-sides summaries. Practice to a hard 30-minute clock: five minutes planning, twenty writing, five revising is a sustainable split.
ETS defines three content areas for the Mathematics subtest: Number and Quantity; Data Interpretation and Representation, Statistics, and Probability; and Algebra and Geometry. The emphasis is problem-solving and quantitative reasoning — integers, fractions, ratio and proportion, percent, place value, units and measurement in the first area; reading charts, computing means and medians, and simple probability in the second; linear equations, verbal-to-symbolic translation, slope, area and perimeter, and angle relationships in the third.
The distractor patterns are as learnable as the math. Percent problems offer the discount amount when the question asks for the final price. Rectangle problems offer the perimeter when the question asks for area. Mean questions offer the median and vice versa. 'Less than' translations offer the reversed subtraction. Working the answer choices backward from these known traps catches errors that straight computation misses.
Numeric-entry questions remove the choices entirely, so estimation is your only error check: before computing 42/56 as a percent, know it should land near 75. Many problems integrate two or three skills in sequence — a wage problem that needs rate construction, multiplication, and addition — so practice multi-step problems, not isolated drills, in the final weeks.
Start with a diagnostic on each subtest and let the results drive the split decision. If all three diagnostics are near your state's cut scores, register for the Combined test (5752) — one $150 registration, one session, done. If one subtest lags badly (for most candidates, Mathematics), register separately: focused prep on the weak subtest beats splitting attention three ways, and a passed subtest stays passed.
A workable six-week arc: weeks one and two on your weakest subtest with daily 30-minute drills; weeks three and four adding the second subtest and one full timed section per week; weeks five and six on mixed timed practice, the two Writing essays under a hard clock, and review of every miss by error type rather than by topic. Error-type review — 'I reverse less-than translations' — fixes more future questions than re-reading content ever does.
Logistics to settle before test week: confirm your state's required scores and whether it accepts Core alternatives, name your four free score recipients at registration, and decide home versus test center — the at-home option needs a quiet room, a working webcam, and a system check done in advance. Every question deserves an answer: unscored pretest items are mixed in unidentified, and there is nothing to gain by leaving blanks.

- Alternative explanation
- A rival cause that could account for an observed result, such as a blockbuster exhibit opening the same month admission became free. Spotting one is the standard way to weaken a causal argument.
- Area versus perimeter
- Area measures surface inside a figure (length × width for rectangles); perimeter measures the boundary (2 × (length + width)). Offering one when the question asks the other is the test's favorite geometry trap.
- Author's purpose
- Why a writer includes a detail, example, or sentence — to illustrate a claim, concede a point, offer a remedy, or rebut an objection. Purpose questions ask what work the text is doing, not whether it is true.
- Comma splice
- Two independent clauses joined by a comma alone. Legal joins use a semicolon, a period, or a comma plus a coordinating conjunction; omitting punctuation entirely creates a fused sentence instead.
- Complement rule
- The probability an event does not happen: one minus the probability it does. A NOT-black draw from 5 white and 3 black socks is 1 − 3/8 = 5/8 — and the capitalized NOT is there because rushed readers miss it.
- Core Combined test
- Test 5752, the registration that schedules all three Core subtests in a single $150 session instead of three separate appointments. Scores still report per subtest against each state's own cut score.
- Cut score
- The passing score a state sets for each Core subtest. There is no national passing standard; the same scaled score can pass in one state and fall short in another, so state requirements come first in planning.
- Dangling modifier
- An opening participial phrase whose implied actor is not the sentence's subject — 'Running to catch the bus, my backpack split open.' Repaired by giving the modifier its own clause or fixing the subject.
- Double negative
- Nonstandard stacking of negative words, including hidden negatives: hardly, scarcely, and barely already carry negative force, so 'could not hardly' reverses into error.
- Fact versus opinion
- The distinction between verifiable statements and evaluative judgments. Numbers and events can be confirmed or refuted; rankings, praise, and 'wisest' or 'best' claims are opinion regardless of surrounding data.
- Inference
- A conclusion supported but not stated by a passage. Reading rewards the most modest inference the evidence can carry; choices with always, never, or entirely usually overreach.
- Main idea
- The central point a passage develops. Main-idea and best-title answers must account for the whole text — a choice that matches only one detail or paragraph is a designed trap.
- Median
- The middle value of a data set after sorting. For five scores, the third-smallest is the median; grabbing the middle of the unordered list is the classic error, and the mean is a different center entirely.
- Numeric-entry question
- A Mathematics format with no answer choices — the candidate types the numeric answer directly, which removes guessing and makes estimation the only available error check.
- Order of operations
- The evaluation sequence for expressions: parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. In 2 + 3 × 4², the exponent resolves first, making the value 50, not 80.
- Paired passages
- A Reading stimulus of two short texts on one topic, about 200 words combined, with four to seven questions — often asking where the authors agree, which requires support from both texts.
- Parallel structure
- The rule that items in a series share grammatical form: reviewed, weighed, and recommended. A tense or form break mid-series is one of the most frequently tested usage errors.
- Percent change
- The change divided by the earlier value. From 120 to 150 visits is a 25 percent increase because 30/120 = 0.25; using the later value as the base is the built-in distractor.
- Place value
- The value a digit carries by position. Decimal comparison proceeds place by place after padding to equal length — 0.45 beats 0.405 — so digit count alone never determines size.
- Praxis Core
- The ETS Core Academic Skills for Educators exam — Reading (5713), Writing (5723), and Mathematics (5733) — used by states and teacher-prep programs to verify academic readiness before admission or licensure.
- Pronoun case
- The form a pronoun takes by role: subjects take I/who, objects take me/whom. Objects of prepositions take the objective case — between you and me — and who/whoever is set by its role inside its own clause.
- Proportion
- An equation of two ratios, the engine behind map scales, recipes, and unit prices. Writing units beside each factor — 3.5 inches × 20 miles per inch — exposes wrong setups before they cost points.
- Research skills
- The Writing part covering source evaluation and documentation: credibility rests on authority, method, and currency; quotations must be exact or show alterations; in-text citations point to the reference list.
- Revision-in-context
- The Writing part that presents a draft passage and asks how to improve specific sentences — clarity of reference, concision, modifier placement, and combining repetitive sentences without new errors.
- Selected-response question
- A question answered by choosing from provided options. All 56 Reading questions and the 40-question Writing section use this format, and it makes up most of the Mathematics subtest as well.
- Slope
- A line's steepness: change in y over change in x between two points. From (0, 3) to (2, 7) the slope is 4/2 = 2; inverting the ratio and taking only the y-change are the standard distractors.
- Subject-verb agreement
- The requirement that a verb match its subject in number. Core traps: intervening prepositional phrases, singular indefinite pronouns like each and every, and neither…nor agreeing with the nearer subject.
- Thesis statement
- The arguable claim an essay defends, ideally previewing its support. Announcements ('this essay will discuss'), observations, and truisms leave nothing to argue and score poorly on the essay rubric.
- Unscored pretest question
- An experimental question mixed into a subtest without identification and excluded from scoring. Because it cannot be distinguished from scored items, every question deserves full effort.
- Vocabulary in context
- A question asking what a word most nearly means as used in the passage. The reliable method is substituting each choice into the original sentence, since common meanings are often the wrong ones.
