Use this sheet as a fast review for the Philippine Military Academy Entrance Examination. Algebra speed checks

• Linear equation routine: clear fractions, combine like terms, isolate the variable, then substitute your answer back. Example: 3x + 5 = 20 gives 3x = 15, so x = 5; check: 3(5) + 5 = 20.
• Distribution: a(b + c) = ab + ac. Mistake to avoid: 2(x + 4) is 2x + 8, not 2x + 4.
• Signs: negative times negative is positive; negative plus negative stays negative. Example: -6 - 4 = -10, while (-6)(-4) = 24.
• Percent proportion: part/base = percent/100. Example: If 18 is 30 percent of a number, write 18/x = 30/100, so 30x = 1800 and x = 60.
• Word problems: define the unknown before calculating. If a number increased by 7 is 19, write n + 7 = 19, not 7n = 19.

Grammar and composition shortcuts

• Subject-verb agreement: find the real subject, not the nearest noun. Example: The list of supplies is ready.
• Pronoun clarity: a pronoun must clearly point to one noun. Weak: Marco told Luis that he was late. Better: Marco told Luis, “I was late.”
• Parallel structure: keep items in the same form. Correct: The cadet planned to run, to study, and to rest.
• Sentence repair: when choosing a revision, prefer clear, complete, and concise wording over fancy wording.
• Composition check: a strong paragraph has one main idea, supporting details, and transitions such as however, therefore, and for example.

Reading, verbal reasoning, and numerical reasoning

• Main idea: ask, “What is the whole passage mostly proving or explaining?” Avoid answers that mention only one detail.
• Inference: choose what must reasonably follow from the text, not what could be true in real life.
• Vocabulary in context: replace the word with each option and keep the one that preserves the sentence’s meaning and tone.
• Numerical reasoning: estimate first. If the answer choices are far apart, approximation can expose impossible options quickly.
• Ratio example: If 3 notebooks cost 45 pesos, one costs 15 pesos, so 8 cost 120 pesos.

Pattern analysis checklist

• Number sequences: test addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, alternating rules, and squares. Example: 2, 5, 11, 23 adds 3, 6, 12, so the next addend is 24 and the next term is 47.
• Letter patterns: convert letters to positions. Example: C, F, I, L moves +3 each time, so the next is O.
• Shape patterns: track one feature at a time: rotation, shading, number of sides, position, or repetition.
• Matrix items: compare rows and columns separately. A missing box often combines two rules, such as “shape changes across” and “shading changes down.”
