The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the Department of Defense's entrance battery, taken by every US enlistee. Its subtests measure aptitude in four domains — Verbal, Math, Science and Technical, and Spatial — and its scores do two different jobs that candidates constantly conflate.
The first job is the enlistment gate: the AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score, computed from just four subtests — Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Word Knowledge — and reported as a percentile from 1 to 99 against a national sample of 18-to-23-year-olds. Each service branch sets its own minimum AFQT score, so check current requirements with a recruiter for your target branch.
The second job is job qualification: the science, technical, and spatial subtests feed the line-score composites each branch uses to qualify you for specific military occupations. Strategy follows directly: the AFQT four decide whether you enlist; the rest decide what you can do once in. Prioritize accordingly.
Most candidates take the CAT-ASVAB — the computer-adaptive version given at MEPS and most MET test sites. Adaptive means the test tailors itself: answer correctly and the next item is typically harder, answer incorrectly and it is easier, which lets the test measure your level precisely with fewer questions. The consequence that changes strategy: you cannot go back and change earlier answers, so commit deliberately the first time.
Per-subtest scored-question counts and time limits (without tryout questions): General Science 15 questions/12 minutes, Arithmetic Reasoning 15/55, Word Knowledge 15/9, Paragraph Comprehension 10/27, Mathematics Knowledge 15/31, Electronics Information 15/10, Auto Information 10/7, Shop Information 10/6, Mechanical Comprehension 15/22, and Assembling Objects 15/18. Some sessions include unscored tryout questions that extend those limits.
The paper-and-pencil version survives at only a handful of MET sites; it combines Auto and Shop Information into a single AS subtest and drops Assembling Objects. If time expires on the CAT, unfinished items are scored as random guesses — a penalty — though the published limits are liberal enough that nearly all examinees finish.
Arithmetic Reasoning is word problems: distance-rate-time, unit prices and better buys, percent change, ratios and mixtures, work rates, and multi-step bills with fixed and variable parts. The subtest gives generous time (55 minutes for 15 scored questions) precisely because setup is the skill — translating the story into the right operation. Write the intermediate quantity down; skipped steps under adrenaline are the main point-loser.
Mathematics Knowledge is the school-math companion: solving equations and inequalities, exponents, distribution, perimeter versus area versus volume, angle relationships, and probability basics. Its pace is brisker (31 minutes for 15), rewarding automatic recall over derivation.
Two habits pay across both: estimate before computing (a convoy at 45 mph covering 180 miles obviously takes about 4 hours, not 2.5), and learn the distractor patterns — the perimeter answer on an area question, the percent-of-new-value on a percent-increase question, the boundary value on a strict inequality. The wrong answers are designed from predictable mistakes; knowing the designs is half the defense.
Word Knowledge asks what a word 'most nearly means,' straight or in a sentence. Three tools cover most items: substitution (drop each choice into the sentence and keep the one that preserves meaning), roots and prefixes (rect = straight, cis = cut, im- negates — an unfamiliar word often decodes on sight), and antonym alertness — the test loves planting the exact opposite among the choices, which punishes guessing by vague association. Its pace is the battery's fastest: 15 questions in 9 minutes.
Paragraph Comprehension gives short passages and asks main ideas, stated details, causes, and one-step inferences. The governing rule mirrors every good reading test: the answer is in the passage. Choices that import outside plausibility — real-world-true but text-absent — are traps, and the most modest inference the text supports beats any bolder one.
For AFQT purposes these two subtests combine with the math pair, so a weak vocabulary is as enlistment-limiting as weak algebra. Daily word-list work compounds faster than any other verbal investment because WK is pure breadth.
These four subtests do not touch the AFQT, but they open doors: mechanical, electronics, aviation, and skilled-trade ratings all draw on their line scores. General Science spans life science (photosynthesis versus respiration, circulatory basics, food chains), physical science (phase-change temperatures, sound through media), and earth-and-space (planet order, weather). It is broad but shallow — high-school survey depth.
Electronics Information centers on the unit map (ohms, volts, amperes, watts), Ohm's law in every rearrangement, conductors versus insulators, series versus parallel behavior, and household protection devices. Auto and Shop Information reward familiarity with engine subsystems (what the alternator, radiator, and oil filter each do; the four-stroke sequence) and tool-to-purpose matching (torque wrench, jigsaw, feeler gauge).
Mechanical Comprehension is applied physics without heavy math: mechanical advantage as load over effort, gear direction and speed ratios, fixed versus movable pulleys, inclined planes, and Pascal's principle in hydraulics. If your target job needs these scores, drill them with the same seriousness as the AFQT four — the concepts repeat form to form far more than the math subtests do.
Testing happens at one of 65 Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) across the US and Puerto Rico, or at satellite MET sites for candidates farther out. Bring valid identification — you will not be admitted without it — and do not be late: late arrivals are turned away and rescheduled. Your recruiter may drive you there but cannot enter the testing room.
Scores arrive as standard scores per subtest (normed so about half of 18-to-23-year-olds score 50 or above and about 16 percent score 60 or above) plus the AFQT percentile, which sorts into categories from I (93-99) down through V (1-9). Higher categories widen both enlistment options and incentive eligibility, so a score worth having is worth preparing for.
If you want another attempt, the retest clock is fixed: one month after the initial test, another month before a second retest, and six months between all further retests. One more rule worth knowing: an AFQT jump of 20 or more points within six months triggers a mandatory confirmation test — the system's guard against one-off spikes. Build your study plan to peak once, on the attempt that counts.

- Mechanical advantage

- Producers and consumers
- The food-chain roles: producers photosynthesize their own food, consumers eat other organisms, and decomposers recycle dead matter — a General Science fixture tested as definitions and ordering.
- Retest clock
- The required waits between ASVAB attempts: one month after the initial test, another month after the first retest, then six months between every subsequent retest.
- Series circuit
- A single-path circuit where the same current flows through every element and voltage divides across resistances — the mirror image of parallel circuits, where voltage is common and current divides.
- Standard score
- A subtest score normed against a national sample of 18-to-23-year-olds, scaled so about half score 50 or above and about 16 percent score 60 or above.
- Supplementary angles
- Angle pairs summing to 180 degrees — a straight line — versus complementary pairs summing to 90. The C-for-corner, S-for-straight hook resolves the recurring confusion.
- Tryout questions
- Unscored experimental items mixed into some CAT-ASVAB subtests. They extend the stated time limits and cannot be distinguished from scored items, so every question deserves effort.
- Unit price
- Cost divided by quantity — the only valid basis for better-buy comparisons. Comparing package totals instead of per-ounce prices is the designed error in shopping problems.
- Word Knowledge
- The AFQT vocabulary subtest — 15 scored questions in just 9 minutes, asking what a word 'most nearly means' straight or in a sentence. Substitution and root recognition are the working tools.
- Worker-hours
- The conserved quantity in crew problems: workers times hours stays constant for a fixed job, so doubling the crew halves the time — an inverse relation the direct-proportion distractor ignores.
